If you plan to study Chinese language, then you need to determine which process you want to use. Online software programs are useful for learning vocabulary. However, some programs cannot tell you if you are pronouncing words wrong. Going to China for immersion studies is highly effective, but also highly expensive. So people choose to study Chinese language in a class, either at a local school or through a cultural society.
While you should take your coursework seriously, remember there are other methods to study Chinese language. Once the class has taught you the basics you will need to find a way to make use of what you have learned. You can find fun and educational things to further your education.
For starters, find a partner to help you study Chinese language. As previously mentioned, study alone methods have limitations. Finding a native speaker who can study with you is ideal. This person may be a friend, coworker or anyone who is willing to meet with you on a regular basis and help you practice. Even going out for a weekly cup of tea together and speaking only Chinese will tremendously help. Remember, allow your partner to correct mistakes.
If you are in China or are able to visit a local Chinatown, then use this time as an opportunity to talk to everyone. Even if your language skills are not perfect, people are usually more than willing to help out someone who makes the effort. Talk to the guy picking up your trash, the girl at the nail salon or random people waiting at the subway. You will see your language skills improve. Since small talk is generally repetitive, it will help you to improve your speaking and pronunciation.
Get in the habit of taking a notebook with you during the time you want to study Chinese language. Develop a routine of writing down words and phrases which are important to you. This list should include words you use on a regular basis at work and home. As your list grows, you can create flashcards to help you study. Strive to learn at least three new words or phrases per day.
Pay attention to your surroundings. If you are in China or Chinatown, then take time to read everything you see. Learning to read signs, posters and other written material will make it easier for you to recognize words when you study Chinese language. In addition, put these words in your notebook for future reference.

Lastly, since everyone needs to eat, choose an authentic Chinese restaurant where the menu is printed in Chinese. This method can be a great way to accustom yourself to the tastes of China while you study Chinese language. If you are totally clueless as to where to begin, then pick a character you see listed frequently and commit it to memory or write it in your notebook. Each time you eat out, add another character to the list and you will gradually find your vocabulary as well as your taste buds expanding.
